Brigitte Messaoud more than just a pretty face for the revamped LFL Canada

Despite the disappointment of the second LFL Canada season being rescheduled for 2014, there are many aspects that shall make it well worth the wait. An expansion team in Calgary promises to add to the excitement of the Western Canadian rivalries. One of those players on the roster could have been Brigitte Messaoud. Had the Fillies marched out in the planned 2013 campaign, she would have been given number 13. Unlucky for some, it may have propelled Messaoud into a fan favorite.

In addition to her goals of gridiron glory, Messaoud is also a fitness and bikini model. A sponsored athlete with Alberta-based retailer Catalyst Supplements, she began competing in 2008. Measuring in at 5’4”, she juggles the responsibilities of training for the National Physique and Athletics Association (NPAA circuit) along with a career in the Oil & Gas Industry as a Regulatory Analyst along with occasional weekend work as a bartender.

Her ability to balance everything can also be attributed to a very empathic trainer (Nadine Dumas) who has helped her achieve results. Assisting her to gain perspective with regards to body image and a failed relationship, it provided Messaoud with the energy and enthusiasm to excel. In addition, she showed tremendous perseverance in rebounding from a bout of kidney failure.

Today, if one word can describe Messaoud, it would be empowered. Having navigated through the rough waters and emerged stronger for it, a healthier and more confident Messaoud is more than just an athlete but an inspiration to women of all ages that have suffered from personal or body image issues.

It is the type of spirit that makes her story one that should endear Fillies fans. While there is no question that Messaoud and her teammates on the Fillies are very beautiful women, there is a toughness, dedication and strength on the inside that simply cannot be measured.

Revealing a warm yet human side, the courage of Messaoud’s journey to the LFL defines the self-discipline and character that encompasses the sometimes underappreciated world of female athletics. Although her football ambitions have suffered an unfortunate delay, a silver lining is evident from the new friends she has gained. From several competitors with the Calgary Rage of the WWCFL to remarkable women from other walks of life, it is part of a journey in which she hopes teamwork and friendship go hand-in-hand in an effort that may bear championship fruit at the end of a unique sporting journey.
